The Fitbit Versa 4 is the company’s fourth-generation smartwatch and my favorite Fitbit device to date. The smartwatch is waterproof up to 50 meters, which means it can be submerged in water for a short amount of time. It’s also a Fitbit Pay-enabled device, which means you can use it to pay for purchases at retailers that accept Fitbit Pay. The smartwatch does a lot of things that its predecessor, the Versa 3, couldn’t do, but Fitbit didn’t add everything we wanted in this update. That said, the new features are great and the missing features are ones we’re hoping Fitbit will add in a future update. The Versa 4 is a tad bigger than its predecessor, with a bigger display that makes it easier to see your metrics at a glance. It’s made out of durable metal, which I like, and the case and band are both easy to remove and swap. The Fitbit Versa 4 has a 40-hour battery life. Fitbit claims that in smartwatch mode, you can charge the Versa 4 about 50 percent in 1.5 hours, 80 percent in 3 hours, and 100 percent in 6 hours. Fitbit recently improved its chargers and cables, and the Versa 4 will charge a lot faster than its predecessor. The Versa 4 is a fitness tracker first and foremost, which means it pairs well with Fitbit’s lineup of fitness trackers, heart rate trackers and smartwatches. I primarily use the Versa 4 with my Fitbit Ionic and Fitbit Flyer activity trackers, which show me my heart rate, steps, distance and calories burned. The Versa 4 also pairs well with Samsung’s Gear IconX, and Nike’s new Charge 3 smartwatch. The Fitbit Versa 4 can be paired with up to five different Fitbit devices. I really like the Versa 4’s new daily readiness report. The report shows me my step goals for the day, my resting heart rate, and how much time I’ve spent in light, moderate, and vigorous intensity activity. The report can also show me how sleep affects my resting heart rate, and what time of day my heart rate usually gets low. The Versa 4 also has guided breathing exercises, which I appreciate. There’s also a guided mindfulness session that walks you through breathing techniques. Fitbit also says that the Versa 4 has new tools to help women manage their menstrual cycle. The band’s SpO2 sensors are able to see blood oxygen level (SpO2), and it can track the duration that you’ve been sleeping. The SpO2 sensors also look for certain patterns and know when you wake up throughout the night. The SpO2 sensors aren’t as accurate as a chest strap, but they are an improvement over the SpO2 sensors on the Versa 3. The Versa 4 comes with a few great watch faces, including an analog clock face and a 24-hour clock face. Fitbit says you can add your own watch faces as well. The Versa 4 has a lot of activity tracking features, including GPS tracking, auto exercise recognition, and automatic exercise tracking. Fitbit Versa 4 is compatible with hundreds of exercise apps, including Fitbit Coach, Runtastic, Runkeeper, MapMyRun, and Endomondo. You can create

The Amazfit GPS watch is rugged, waterproof, and has a battery life that rivals that of fitness trackers. The Amazfit app is also slick and easy to navigate, letting you view multiple metrics quickly in a glance. We had a few issues with the GPS accuracy, but it had the lowest variance of any smartwatch we’ve seen, and it was still able to deliver impressive results. The Amazfit GPS watch is water resistant to 10 ATM, which is great for activities like swimming, though we wouldn’t recommend taking it diving. The watch itself is IPX-8 certified, which means it’s resistant to water and dust. Have a light workout or a leisurely walk? Its heart rate sensor is sensitive enough to detect your pulse through your shirt. The Amazfit app is easy to navigate and lets you view a variety of metrics quickly. The device is accurate enough to track elevation levels, and readings are labeled in fitness and running modes. It’s also nice to know that the watch is Bluetooth 4.2 instead of Bluetooth 4.0, which is the standard on most fitness devices.

Garmin’s Vivoactive 4 is the company’s most accomplished smartwatch yet, with all the features and features we have come to expect from Garmin and, for the first time, a heart rate sensor. The inclusion of the heart rate sensor puts Vivoactive 4 in a much more competitive position than Garmin’s previous non-smartwatch, the Vivoactive 3. It also has an excellent feature set for the true fitness buff, including altimeter, GPS, music, sleep, stress management and heart rate tracking. We tested the watch around 7 days a week, training 15-20 minutes a day, for 35-40 minutes, 5 days a week. We tracked our heart rate, sleep, stress, weight, workouts and daily steps throughout the day. Garmin’s new running metrics are very accurate, and we appreciate the new metrics for yoga and cycling, although we’d like more metrics for swimming.

The Venu 2S is the latest batch of smartwatches that we reviewed. We like the svelte 0.3-inch design, which feels light and comfortable, even though it’s much bigger than our previous pick. The display is bright and vivid, and the watch is fast and responsive. Like other smartwatches, it could do with longer battery life, but Garmin claims 2 days with GPS and up to 10 days using smartwatch mode, so it’s about average for the category.

The Galaxy Watch 4 combines all of the features that make Samsung’s older Gear watches great with new software, a sleeker design, and a slick new 44mm case size. The Galaxy Watch 4 has a wealth of features, including GPS, heart-rate tracking, waterproofing, and a full-fledged Android operating system. The watch uses many of the same sensors as the original Gear watches, but the display is larger and has brighter pixels, and the interface is much smoother and easier to use. It’s also compatible with both iOS and Android devices, so if you primarily use one, you can easily switch back and forth. This model we tested has a larger, 44mm case, and it runs slightly faster than the original Galaxy Watch’s 42mm case, but it’s still slim and comfortable to wear. The display is bright and sharp, and the interface is easy to navigate, but we weren’t crazy about the relatively static buttons or the lack of an option to change the watch faces. That said, Samsung added features like walkie-talkie, Spotify, and voice control, so it’s a better overall smartwatch than its predecessor. It’s also worth considering the Garmin Fenix 5x Plus, which is a newer, more expensive version of the Gear 3, and it comes with built-in GPS, a heart-rate monitor, and built-in music storage, so it’s better suited to runners and triathletes.

The Garmin Venu SQ is a strong performer for running and walking. It offers a wrist-based GPS that gives you reasonably accurate pace and distance estimates, and you can record workouts, too. In our testing, the watch consistently provided better distance estimates than our previous pick, the Garmin Forerunner 735XT, even when we tracked runs and walks outside. We also liked the watch’s bright 1.2-inch screen, which makes it easy to keep an eye on your pace, distance and heart rate, as well as the ability to review data at a glance. The watch’s long battery life (up to a week) and swim tracking helped the watch earn our Runner’s Choice award. The screen resolution is great, though some folks may find that the watch looks better on the inside than it does on the outside. The watch’s audio is good, though it’s no better than what you get on a typical Android Wear watch. The watch is compatible only with Android 5.0 Lollipop and above, so iPhone users will have to wait.

The Amazfit GTS 2 mini is the best fitness-focused smart watch you can buy, and a great value at $169. You get an impressive lineup of features, including built-in GPS, an excellent fitness-tracking system, and Android 5.0 support. The watch’s small 1.55-inch AMOLED display is bright and clear, easily readable in daylight. It’s also water resistant to 5 ATM, making it wearable in light outdoor activity. This watch takes some getting used to, though, thanks to its proprietary navigation software. You’ll need to download Amazfit’s companion app to sync the watch with your phone; once you’ve done that, it’s pretty quick to track your runs, bike rides, walks, and other types of workouts. It’s also fun to use Google’s own Android Wear software and watch faces, and the Amazfit hiker watch face has decent GPS accuracy and apparently responds to spoken notifications. It’s compatible with both Android and iOS, so you’ll get the Google Assistant and Alexa built-in, as well as voice-activated music playback control (which we tested). The Wi-Fi sync process is a little finicky, and in our testing, notifications from the watch didn’t appear right away,

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 Classic, which we just upgraded to make room for the Samsung Gear Sport Classic on this list, is the brand’s top luxury smartwatch. It boasts a lovely, classic design; a long-lasting battery; and a host of premium features, such as a heart rate monitor and GPS, that you’d only expect from a luxury model. It has a beautiful AMOLED display, a dust and water-resistant design, an always-on screen, and LTE connectivity. The 42mm model we tested is a bit bigger than the standard 38mm version, and it’s a bit thicker and heavier than the Gear Sport Classic. It’s also priced at $230, which is $40 more than the Gear Sport Classic. But the size and heft are worth it for the excellent battery life, and we think the larger size will appeal to both genders.

The Garmin Venu Sq 2 GPS smartwatch might be our favorite smartwatch for exercising, in large part because of its heart-rate tracking, robust activity tracking options, and easy-to-use sleep-tracking features. It has great activity tracking features, including a running and cycling mode, and GPS-enabled indoor workouts (including cycling) as well as GPS outdoor running. It also has a surprisingly long battery life, at up to 11 days in smartwatch mode, and we loved its OLED display, which is bright and easy to read in bright sunlight. But the Venu® Sq 2 becomes a bit unwieldy when used as a smartwatch with notifications, because the display takes up much of the watch face and it’s hard to read text and time on the small display. It also lacks third-party phone support (the watch’s cellular radio is disabled), so you can’t receive calls or texts from your phone.
